Signs Your Water Heater Is Failing

  • No hot water, or not enough. Hot water runs out faster than it used to, or never gets hot.
  • Rumbling, popping, or banging. Usually sediment at the bottom of the tank.
  • Water around the base. Leaks from the tank, fittings, or the relief valve.
  • Rusty or discolored hot water. Can point to corrosion inside the tank.
  • Hot water that smells odd. Often related to the anode rod or water chemistry.
  • Pilot or ignition trouble on gas units, or tripped breakers and bad elements on electric units.
  • Temperature that swings between too hot and lukewarm.

If you see water pooling around the tank, turn off the water supply to the heater and give us a call. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility first.

Repair or Replace?

Not every problem means a new water heater. Many issues can be repaired, such as:

  • Thermostats, heating elements, and igniters
  • Gas valves, thermocouples, and pilot assemblies
  • Temperature and pressure relief valves
  • Fittings, supply connections, and drain valves
  • Anode rods

Replacement usually makes more sense when the tank itself is leaking, the unit is near the end of its life and repairs keep adding up, or it simply isn’t big enough for your household anymore. We’ll look at your heater, explain what we find, and give you honest options with a free estimate. If repair is the smarter choice, we’ll tell you.

Tank vs. Tankless vs. Heat Pump

Tank water heaters

The traditional choice. A tank stores and heats water so it’s ready when you need it. Available in gas and electric. They’re simple, familiar, and straightforward to replace, but once the tank’s hot water is used up, you wait for it to recover.

Tankless water heaters

Tankless (on-demand) units heat water as it flows through, so you don’t run out the way you can with a tank. They take up less space. They do need to be sized correctly for how many fixtures you run at once, and they need regular descaling, especially with hard water. Switching from a tank may require gas line, venting, or electrical changes, which we’ll go over with you up front.

Heat pump water heaters

Heat pump water heaters (also called hybrid electric water heaters) pull heat from the surrounding air to heat water. They can cost less to run than a standard electric tank. They need enough space and airflow around the unit, and they cool the room they’re in a bit, so location matters, especially in a Bozeman basement or utility room. We’ll help you decide if one fits your home.

Not sure which is right? We’ll talk through your household’s hot water use, your space, and your fuel type, and recommend what makes sense.

Hard Water and Water Heater Sediment

Bozeman’s city water is generally considered moderately hard, and many wells in the valley have hard water too. Over time, minerals settle to the bottom of a tank as sediment or scale up a tankless heat exchanger. That can make a heater work harder, make noise, and wear out sooner.

What helps:

  • Flushing your tank on the maker’s recommended schedule
  • Descaling tankless units regularly
  • A water softener to cut down on scale throughout the house. See our water softener guide

Heat Pump Water Heater Incentives

Incentive programs change, so here’s the short version:

  • NorthWestern Energy has a Heat Pump Water Heater Program for eligible Montana residential electric customers replacing an existing electric water heater. The incentive is applied through NorthWestern’s participating contractors, and eligibility rules and funding limits apply. Check NorthWestern’s page for current details.
  • The federal tax credit for heat pump water heaters covered systems installed through December 31, 2025, according to the IRS.
  • Montana’s home energy rebate programs were not yet available as of October 2026, according to Montana DEQ.

Ask us about current incentives before you choose a new water heater. We’ll help you understand your options.

Water Heater FAQ

How do I know if my water heater needs to be replaced?

A leaking tank is the clearest sign. Repeated repairs, rusty hot water, or a unit that can’t keep up with your household are also good reasons to consider replacement. We’ll give you a free estimate and tell you honestly whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Why is my water heater making popping or rumbling noises?

Usually it’s sediment from hard water that has settled at the bottom of the tank. Flushing the tank can help. If the noise continues, have a plumber take a look.

Should I get a tank, tankless, or heat pump water heater?

It depends on your hot water use, space, fuel type, and budget. Tanks are simple and familiar, tankless units heat on demand, and heat pump units can lower operating costs for electric homes. We’ll help you choose.

Are there incentives for heat pump water heaters in Montana?

NorthWestern Energy offers a heat pump water heater program for eligible residential electric customers, applied through participating contractors. Program rules change, so ask us about current incentives and check NorthWestern Energy’s program page.
