Signs You Have a Clog

Some clogs are obvious. Others creep up slowly. Watch for:

  • Slow drains. Water pools in the sink, tub, or shower and takes a while to go down.
  • Gurgling. Drains or toilets gurgle when water runs somewhere else in the house.
  • Bad smells. Sewer or rotten smells coming from drains.
  • Recurring clogs. The same drain keeps clogging even after you clear it.
  • Toilet trouble. The toilet flushes weakly, refills oddly, or backs up.
  • Multiple drains acting up at once. If the tub backs up when you flush the toilet, or the basement floor drain backs up when the washer drains, the problem is probably farther down the line, often in the main sewer line.

One slow drain is usually a local clog. Several drains acting up together usually means it’s time to call a plumber.

How We Clear Drains

We start by finding where the blockage is and what’s causing it, then pick the right approach.

Drain snaking (augering)

A drain snake is a flexible cable that we feed into the drain line to break up or pull out the clog. It’s the go-to method for most sink, tub, shower, toilet, and many main line clogs.

Hydro-jetting

Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the inside of a pipe. It’s sometimes used for heavy grease buildup or lines that keep clogging. Whether it’s the right fit depends on the condition and material of your pipes. Ask us whether it makes sense for your situation.

Finding the cause

If a drain keeps clogging, clearing it again isn’t really a fix. We’ll talk with you about what we found and what might be causing it, whether that’s a grease problem, a sagging section of pipe, root intrusion, or old piping that needs repair. If repairs are needed, see our plumbing repair services.

Kitchen, Bathroom, and Main Sewer Line Clogs

Kitchen drains

Kitchen clogs usually come from grease, oil, and food scraps. Grease goes down warm and liquid, then cools and sticks to the inside of the pipe, catching everything that comes after it.

Bathroom drains

Hair and soap scum are the usual suspects in sinks, tubs, and showers. Toilets clog from too much paper or from things that should never be flushed, like “flushable” wipes, paper towels, and hygiene products.

Main sewer line

The main line carries everything from your house to the city sewer or your septic system. When it clogs, you’ll often see backups in the lowest drains first (basement drains, tubs, and showers), and several fixtures will act up at once. A main line clog needs attention fast, because wastewater has nowhere to go but back into your home.

Bozeman Drain Problems in Winter (and All Year)

Bozeman’s climate and housing mix bring a few drain issues we see again and again:

  • Frozen or slow drains in cold snaps. Drain lines and traps in exterior walls, crawl spaces, unheated garages, or outbuildings can freeze in deep cold, and a partly frozen line drains slowly or backs up. Vent pipes on the roof can also frost over in extreme cold, which can make drains gurgle or run slow.
  • Grease in cold weather. Cold pipes make grease harden faster, so holiday cooking season is a common time for kitchen clogs.
  • Tree roots in older neighborhoods. Mature trees are part of what makes Bozeman’s older neighborhoods so nice, but roots can find their way into older sewer lines through joints and cracks, especially in older pipe materials. Recurring main line backups in an older home can be a sign of root intrusion.
  • Cabins and second homes. Drains and traps in seasonal homes need to be properly winterized so standing water in them doesn’t freeze.

If you suspect a frozen drain, don’t pour boiling water down plastic pipes and don’t use an open flame. Call us.

DIY Dos and Don’ts

Do:

  • Use a plunger on simple sink, tub, and toilet clogs (a flange plunger for toilets).
  • Pull hair out of tub and shower drains and use drain screens.
  • Scrape grease and food into the trash, not the sink.
  • Know where your main water shutoff and sewer cleanout are.

Don’t:

  • Pour grease, oil, or coffee grounds down the drain.
  • Flush wipes (even “flushable” ones), paper towels, or hygiene products.
  • Rely on harsh chemical drain cleaners. They can be hard on some pipes, and they make the job more hazardous if a plumber has to open the line afterward.
  • Keep plunging a toilet that’s overflowing. Shut off the water valve behind it first.
  • Ignore multiple slow drains. That’s usually a main line issue, and it won’t fix itself.

24/7 Emergency Drain Service

Sewage backing up into the house, an overflowing toilet that won’t stop, or every drain in the house backed up? That’s an emergency. We take emergency calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Until we get there:

  1. Stop running water and stop flushing.
  2. If a toilet is overflowing, turn off the valve behind it.
  3. Keep kids and pets away from any sewage, and avoid touching it.

Drain Cleaning FAQ

How do I know if my main sewer line is clogged?

If several drains back up or gurgle at once, or water comes up in a basement floor drain, tub, or shower when you flush or run the washer, the clog is probably in the main sewer line. Call a plumber right away.

What’s the difference between drain snaking and hydro-jetting?

Snaking uses a flexible cable to break up or pull out a clog, and it handles most household clogs. Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the inside of a pipe. Whether hydro-jetting is a good fit depends on your pipes, so ask us.

Are chemical drain cleaners safe for my pipes?

Harsh chemical drain cleaners can be hard on some pipes and fixtures, often don’t clear the whole clog, and make the job more hazardous if a plumber has to open the line. A plunger or professional drain cleaning is usually a better choice.

Can drains freeze in Bozeman winters?

Yes. Drain lines and traps in exterior walls, crawl spaces, unheated garages, and seasonal homes can freeze in deep cold, and roof vents can frost over. Don’t use an open flame or pour boiling water into plastic pipes. Call a plumber.

Do you offer emergency drain cleaning?

Yes. My Guy Plumbing takes emergency calls 24/7, and we offer free estimates. Call or text (406) 600-2177.
